“For this assignment, you will be asked to pick two songs: one whose lyrics and/or music reflect where you are at this moment in your lives, and one whose lyrics and/or music reflect where you’d like your education to take you. Then, write an essay in response to the following prompt:

Explain how each song reflects 1) where you are and 2) where you want to be. 

 This essay will require more consideration than your basic instinct to say: “I like this song! So I’m going to write about that!” The most useful text may not be your favorite song.  Instead, you must find a song that the description of your life as you see it now, and as you’d like to see it. 

 You will need to analyze in detail each song you choose. Then you will respond to the texts (those songs) by relating them to your own life. Then, you will support your claim (that the song does indeed reflect where you are/where you are going) with reasons and evidence, which will come from the songs themselves.  This means that you can discuss the musical elements of the song and  incorporate quotes from the lyrics (should your song have lyrics).

Your song can be from any time period, of any genre, from any place, in any language (though if it is not in English, I request that you submit a translation of the lyrics with your paper). 

Your essay must be between 4-5 pages of text, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides. Please use Times New Roman, 12 point font, and align your paper on the left (do not “justify”).  When you quote from the songs, please use MLA format.”
